Since this process is fast you automaticaly select the item which is under the mouse pointer (accepting the lose-button action) workaround only when holding the finger down, dragging the pointer to the item you want. Since still annoying on a desktop depending on your habits an almost impossible act with a laptop and touchpad. ( In my case I ever get the new bookmark folder box ) popped up Suggestion is to expand the menu ever below the menu bar or above but not in the middle and if not enough space to show all items then having a scroll button at the end of the list.
