Just verified the Mozilla behavior: 
- regular link: it behaves as described (which is the same as in KDE 3.1.5).
- window.open(): left click opens a window, MMB opens a new disfunctional tab (it \
actually opens a new tab with the href of the click which is either the javascript \
command which then doesn't work or its nothing because the link calls window.open \
                using an onclick event)
- link with target: works as descrined - LMB opens a new window, MMB opens a new tab. \
IIRC this is actually the same as the khtml behavior of 3.1.5.
