I found this in my .xsession-errors:
sh: line 1: gpg: command not found

It might be that kmail tests by himself whether gpg is working and disables it when \
it does not find it. Quitting kmail, waiting long enough for it to disappear and \
relaunching it seem to allow to set the cryptogrphic options correctly again.
Now, I have no idea why gpg was not found and it might not be related to kmail. could \
those lines be generated by kmail ?
