Good question, the answer is... difficult. (I had found this problem when I 
added the OODraw mime type; I still have not any definitive answer.)

The problem is that we cannot assume that OpenOffice is always present, as the 
user might have chosen not to install OO. (In my installation, I have the 
other problem that OO is linked to my KDE 3.0-SuSE 8.1 and not to my 
self-build KDE 3.1.x.)

As for the native extension, it is need in KOffice to automatically add an the 
extension to the document's file name if needed.
