Yes, I was running as root.
As I realized later, this is not a bug, but just a lack of a "Warning: you are 
going to mess up if tou do this, are you sure?"
Then I discovered that some of the two "fixes" mentined in the original post 
actually works, you just have to "force" some lib to reload the icons by 
selecting a diferent icon soze from the bar (this does not happen 
automagicvally when restarting kde).
