The trick is to neither set the "Encrypt all message parts" option nor 
the "Don't encrypt messages" option in the configuration of the OpenPGP 
plugin. Then encryption with the OpenPGP plugin will behave exactly the 
same as encryption with the built-in OpenPGP support.

The problem is that one can't disable both options once one of the 
options has been enabled. You have to edit KMail's config file 
(~/.kde/share/config/kmailrc). Search for "EncryptEmail=x" and change 
the x to 2.

Please close the bug report after you have verified that it works.
