Thanks for your interest in KFormula. I agree that MathCAD is quite a useful 
tool and having such a beast within koffice would be great. But then it's not 
too easy to build one and a tool that helps typesetting formulas might be a 
first step. ;)

On the other hand, if you want to use kformula together with scilab or the 
like you might be interested in the "Formula String" feature. There's a 
dialog that shows you a rough equivalent of the current formula as ASCII 
string. You can use this dialog (you get it with Edit->Edit Formula 
String...) to insert a (valid) mathematical expression and have kformula draw 
it nicely. Some hand-editing might be needed, though.

That's very basic for sure. But if you want to help me write something more 
sophisticated, you're welcome.
