Sounds like you got it working! After recompiling and reinstalling several
times (I use Gentoo Linux) with no avail, I finally gave up and started
using Sylpheed. I haven't thought anymore about it as Sylpheed meets my
needs, is very fast, and always works ;) I have been waiting for KDE 3.1 to
be finalized before trying to use Kmail again.

Even weirder:
I set up 3 email Pop accounts, and noticed that the first 2 worked. (Notice:
No new messages).
The 3rd was the one that generated the error message when checking.
Removing the account and setting it up again made the error disappear.
