Package: kwin
Version: KDE 3.0.6 CVS/CVSup/Snapshot
Severity: wishlist
Installed from: Compiled sources
Compiler: gcc 2.95.3
OS: Linux
OS/Compiler notes: Not Specified

I'm a big fan of the tabs that the Fluxbox (http://fluxbox.sourceforge.net/) window \
manager uses, and would love to see a similar functionality for the KDE window \
manager.

The basic point of the tabs are that they appear over the windows titlebar (one per \
window). The tabs can be dragged and dropped on another window whereby the window the \
new tab is dropped on aquires the tab and you can now use the two tabs on that window \
to switch between the applications. This works for all windows, not just subwindows \
of the same application. It is absolutely wonderful when you want to conserve screen \
space and want to group windows that you use in combination together. I often group \
nedit, xterm and ddd windows when I'm writing code, allowing me to access all my code \
related windows by using the tabs over a single window. You can ofcourse ungroup \
windows again - simply drag the tab you wish to move to a sepperate window and drop \
it somewhere on the desktop - it will then be ungrouped and appear in its own window \
again.

You can read Fluxbox's authors description of his tabs here: \
http://fluxbox.sourceforge.net/docs/newdoc.tabbing.php

Since Fluxbox has KDE support I can ofcourse just use it instead of kwin, but kwin \
has so many other nice features that I'd rather see the tabs feature incorporated \
into kwin :-) If this happens it would really make my day - try out fluxbox and \
try the feature and I think you'll agree with me that it's super cool.

Since not everyone would appreciate this feature it should be made configureable and \
probably off by default.

Best regards,

Jesper Juhl - jju@dif.dk
