OS/Compiler notes: 

Start kmix. In settings, deselect "show menubar". Now, there is no way to restore it.
I tried left, right, center click all over the kmix window but there was no way to restore the menubar.

The workaround (!!??) is quitting kmix, deleting .kde3/share/config/kmix*, and restarting kmix.
