This bug bit me also; any document with type application/postscript and
encoding gzip gets fed into "Archiver" instead of ghostview. There are
several similar bugs in the database but this one looks like the best
description of the problem. In particular, it is *not* something that can
be fixed by changing the type associations, because the type is
"application/postscript" and there is already a correct viewer attached
to that type.

It appears to me that konqueror is somehow seeing the gzip encoding as if
it were a type - I wouldn't be surprised if there is some logic somewhere
that says "if encoding==gzip, then set type=gzip, no matter what the
server said about the type". That is, of course, a bogus thing to do.

Removing the association of Archiver to the type application/x-gzip causes
konqueror to give a generic "save or open with your choice of app" dialog
box on compressed postscript documents. I haven't found any way to make
it see a document with encoding gzip as any type other than
application/x-gzip. In the long term what's needed is a way to separately
specify how to deal with *encodings*, from how to deal with *MIME types*.
In the short term, I wish I could easily disable the behaviour that
"anything gzip encoded is treated as if it had type application/x-gzip".

Note also that the same kind of problem does NOT occur with other
compressed encodings. In particular, this document:

   http://www.cs.vu.nl/pub/papers/globe/proms.01.ps.Z

comes back with type application/postscript, encoding compress.
konqueror attempts to open it with ghostview (looking at the type), not
Archiver. And then ghostview fails, at least on my installation, claiming
that the document isn't in a format it can read.
