I am having exactly the same problem with artsd (sources compiled from current 
CVS). I commented out that assertion*, recompiled, and have not had a problem 
since.

* line 457, assert(len == can_write);

I am using kernel 2.4.17, with an aureal soundcard - the au8830 OSS driver.

Let me know how I can provide any additional useful information about this 
problem.
