Ok, this changes everything.
It has nothing to do with KWord, or with text files.
It's the image preview that crashes. Apparently the one from the file dialog.
Try turning it off (in the file dialog itself) - provided that you have time for
that before it crashes.
It looks like a bug that has already been fixed, but I can't say for sure
(the bug I know about led to the same backtrace, but was timing related,
not very reproduceable).

Hmm, you mention that kword crashes when opening a .txt file from
the command line ? That has to be something different. Can you generate
a backtrace of that case ?
