Very sorry about the delayed response to your message Ingo. I sent a reply
on the 24th which I can now see never got through (thanks to Greg's
involvement).

What I tried to say was:

I had tried all of the things you suggested, except the lock-file issues.
Setting locking to none brought down all the mail, and then setting it
back to procmail lockfile (the original setting) left it in a useable
state.

However in the last few days, the locking settings have required
toggling in this way a few times when local mail ceased to be collected
again. I'm in a similar position as Greg with respect to the 'mail' group,
and so having added myself to this group nothing has gone wrong yet. I
shall see over the next day or two whether this has cured the problem.

PS My outgoing mail problem appears not to be Kmail related, my logs show
that sendmail believes that they were sent. Problem seems to be
upstream...
