This is nonsensical: If your key expires, you're still able to decrypt 
old messages indefinitely. What you really seem to fear is that you 
forget your passphrase ;-)

What I could think of as a legitimate reason to allow this is the 
scenario where someone uses a encrypted filesystem to store ~/Mail in.

But you have to understand that it is not very high on anyone's to-do 
list here... :-(
