Yes, they do and everything seems to be working as it should now, even after
leaving KMail and restarting X-windows. Thank you very much for cracking that
one.

The .Read.index files both (old and new) start with the line...

# Kmail -Index V1506

The old one then has the line...

  000000000 000000000 4294967295

 ...followed by two blank lines.

Then, in both files, on each line there is some sort of code (e.g.
][¼;Ò,GImezDfB1i7HJyOcCG+O6OR) followed by the sender, the subject and the
recipient of the mail, and then another short code (e.g. ™v).

The list seems the same in both files, except the first entry and part of the
second are missing in the old file.

In the case of the .sent-mail.index files, the situation is pretty much the
same, except in the old file, the first 5 or 6 lines listing the messages are
corrupted with blank lines and with three 10-digit numbers similar to the one
above.

If you would like to have these files, or any others, for further debugging,
I'd be glad to send them directly to your e-mail address.

Thanks again,

John
