"kmail --version" tells you, what version you are really using.

Another idea: Are you using font antialiasing and does the problem not appear 
with this feature disabled?

In any case this looks like either a Qt or X-Server bug that possibly even 
only appears with certain graphic cards and I doubt, that I can do anything 
against that in KMail.
