Have also experienced this SMTP sending problem since upgrading from KDE 
version that came with SUSE 7.1. KDE base 2.2.1 now installed with Kmail 
1.3.1. Problem starts after about one day's uptime, or sending a dozen 
messages. Restarting KDE fixes it.

p.s. Pleased that Konqueror crashes much less now though.
