exactly.

an analogy from more traditional arts: there's a principle that arrangi=
ng=20
items in triangles is aesthetically pleasing to the human eye and can b=
e used=20
to guide the eye from point of interest to point of interest.

now, the average viewer of a painting that employs this bit of trickery=
 is=20
likely to not notice it. in fact, unless they've done some art apprecia=
tion=20
study, most will not be consciosly aware that it is the relative arrang=
ements=20
of items on the canvas into such triangular configurations that heighte=
ns the=20
experience for them.

we experience many things with positive (and negative :) consequences w=
ithout=20
being able to express the "why" behind them. it's just how we're wired =
as=20
biological creatures that evolved over time.

with animated transitions in a computer UI, people will tend to enjoy i=
t more=20
even with subtle animations compared to one without animated transition=
, even=20
if they can't tell you why they are enjoying it more or don't even noti=
ced the=20
animations.. but just try and remove those animated transitions and re-=
test :)

conversely .. if the animations are too noticeable, then it tugs at you=

conscious attention. and then the UI is just as annoying as a child scr=
eaming=20
at the next table in a restaurant -> you want to pay attention to what =
you're=20
doing (enjoying a meal, using facebook, whatever) but someone else is=20=

distracting you from that :)
