Yeah, it's the colors... also, I don't really have a design in mind that we
should adopt but that really looks old school.

Looks like not. Especially with inkscape's (unhinted) rendering

 And embedding a png in an svg doesn't make the svg no longer an svg.

Well, there is: plasma themes.
One can want a SVG there at a certain point (just because we do PNGs it
doesn't mean somebody wouldn't want a fully vectorial SVG in the future),
and anyways that's what plasma::theme gives us.
