hi all =)

i've been looking at the artwork going around for background on various
things: games, the log out dialog, krunner, ksysguard's monitors.... the
background svg's in svn right now tend to be very busy. this is the exact
opposite of what a background should be. i think it would be good to step
back for a moment and consider the purpose of backgrounds images.

there is a desire to make beautiful things, but the trick with a background is
that it needs to stay in the background visually while also being attractive.
the vertical diagonal "slashes" that we have now in several of these
background really draws the attention to the background. too much contrast
between elements in the background is also not good. colours which compete
with foreground colours (e.g. are similar to or more "brilliant") are also
not good if they are in the content area (as opposed to the borders). using
cosmetic pens for borders is also a good idea so that they don't expand to be
these huge borders when the dialog grows.

perhaps we can come up with some guidelines for backgrounds that can help
guide creation of such things?
