This is rather hopeless. 

No one will let pple change the "stable" 3.5.x icon set drastically. 

And the "new" Oxygen theme is the same crap all over again - colored circles with tiny white dots in the middle.

I dueled with some of the team members about the lack of thought in some designs, but, as always, their ego prevailed.

I would suggest to look seriously at Tango set. The drawing quality is primitive compared to Oxygen and Crystal, but the composition, arrangement and thought that went into each icon is vastly superior.
