The old ones simply had way too many colors and stand out as artwork on
a button, not a visual indicator of what you want to do. ie. they are
not usable, only pretty to some people.

When we have a new theme we will do so. Until then we will simply make
improvements on the crystal theme. If the 2d icons are too grey for your
taste, by all means add some color to them and see if everyone likes
them. Simply putting in greyscale icons is not our intention. We are
trying to improve the usability of the icons, that is all.
