Dear KDE Enthusiast,

the KDE Team is pleased to announce the availability of:

	INSTALL-kde-rh51

It can be found at
ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/1.0/contrib/distribution/rpm/RedHat-5.1/i386/binary/INSTALL-kde-rh51

and at our U.S mirror site
ftp://ftp.us.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/1.0/contrib/distribution/rpm/RedHat-5.1/i386/binary/INSTALL-kde-rh51.

it will probably appear firstly at
ftp://ftp.de.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/1.0/contrib/distribution/rpm/RedHat-5.1/i386/binary/INSTALL-kde-rh51.

Here follows the LSM:
	qt-devel-1.41-1rh51.i386.rpm

It can be found at
ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/1.0/contrib/distribution/rpm/RedHat-5.1/i386/binary/qt-devel-1.41-1rh51.i386.rpm

ftp://ftp.us.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/1.0/contrib/distribution/rpm/RedHat-5.1/i386/binary/qt-devel-1.41-1rh51.i386.rpm.

it will probably appear firstly at
ftp://ftp.de.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/1.0/contrib/distribution/rpm/RedHat-5.1/i386/binary/qt-devel-1.41-1rh51.i386.rpm.

Here follows the LSM:

Notes on the "rh51" series of i386 KDE-1.0 rpms for RedHat Linux 5.x/
(1998-10-02)

(rpm packages with names like kdebase-1.0-7rh51.i386.rpm, available
from ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/1.0/distribution/rpm/RedHat-5.1))

(1) These rpms are built to use the package qt-1.33-1rh51.i386.rpm,
which is built using the egcs-1.0.2 compiler that comes with
RedHat 5.1. KDE-1.0 was developed and tested using qt-1.33, which
is the recommended qt release to use. The egcs-compiled qt-1.33 rpm
    package is available at

      ftp://ftp.troll.no/pub/contrib/qt-1.33-1rh51.i386.rpm

The more recent qt-1.4x releases contain new features not needed by
KDE-1.0, but which are being used in KDE-1.1 development, and may be
required by newer KDE applications. These KDE-1.0 rpm packages *should*
work with egcs-compiled qt-1.4x packages, such as

      ftp://ftp.troll.no/pub/qt/linux/redhat/qt-1.40-1rh51.i386.rpm

(or a qt-1.41-1rh51.i386.rpm package, when available). Note that while
(in principle) qt-1.4x should be compatible with applications developed
using qt-1.33, there may be problems in using it with KDE-1.0. So far,
the only serious problem found is a catastrophic memory leak when the
"processor information" in the KDE-1.0 control center is accessed using
qt-1.40. This problem is fixed by a patch since kdebase-1.0-4rh51.

The "rh51" qt and kde rpms contain safeguards to ensure they will
only build and run when compiled with the egcs-1.0.x compiler on a
RedHat 5.x glibc2 system. (Required "virtual packages" qt-egcs-10x.
kdelibs-egcs and kdebase-egcs are part of this mechanism.)

(2) They work on i386 RedHat 5.1 systems. (The ncurses3 rpm package must
    be installed.)

(3) They also work on i386 RedHat 5.0 systems if the libstdc++-2.8.0 runtime
C++ library from the RedHat 5.1 distribution is installed. (This can be
found at ftp.redhat.com and mirrors). If you wish to compile KDE
applications on RedHat 5.0 to work with these rpms, you will need to
install the egcs compiler (see the document "gcc_to_egcs-HOWTO").

These egcs-compiled rpms are recommended for use on RedHat 5.0, because
when KDE is compiled with RedHat 5.0's gcc-2.7.2.3 compiler, the
resulting code breaks RedHat's PAM password authentication system
(the X display segfaults when PAM modules attempt to write to the
system log). Until this problem is fixed, RedHat 5.0 users must
either use egcs-compiled KDE, or KDE compiled without PAM support.

(4) The "rh51" rpms are compiled with egcs-1.0.2 on a glibc2 system with
qt-1.33. Don't mix them with rpms compiled with gcc-2.7.2.3 or libc5.
It is not known if they are compatible with code compiled with egcs-1.1
    (probably not?).

(5) The "rh51" rpms are built using rpm-2.5.3. You may need version
2.5 or higher of the rpm utility. This is an "official" update by
    RedHat for RedHat 5.x.

(6) Quick Installation (for more information, see INSTALL-kde-rh51):
(Here "*" in "*rh51" is the latest release number):

ONLY INSTALL KDE IF YOU CURRENTLY HAVE A WORKING X WINDOW SYSTEM
ON REDHAT 5.x. FIX ANY PROBLEMS WITH "X" BEFORE INSTALLING KDE.

Then Log in as the superuser (root).
From the directory containing the rpms, type:
                                                    (Notes)
rpm -Uvh libstdc++-2.8.0-8.i386.rpm                 (a)
rpm -Uvh qt-1.33-1rh51.i386.rpm (b,c)
rpm -Uvh kdesupport-1.0-*rh51.i386.rpm (d)
rpm -Uvh kdelibs-1.0-*rh51.i386.rpm (d)
rpm -Uvh kdebase-1.0-*rh51.i386.rpm
rpm -Uvh kde*-1.0-*rh51.i386.rpm (e)

For each user who wants KDE as the default desktop, type

/opt/kde/bin/usekde <name>

where <name> is replaced by the username. (Users may also do this for
themselves by just typing "usekde".)

The first time new KDE users start KDE, messages warn them that various
subdirectories are being created in their home directory, and that they
should change a "password" in ~/.kde/share/apps/kfm/magic. To do this
they should just open a terminal window and type

magic_passwd <string>

where <string> is some random sequence of characters (say, about ten) that
they do NOT need to remember, (but must be different from that used by other
users), then logout of the KDE session (click on "K" --> Logout) and start
a new KDE session.

Some RedHat-specific documentation is in /usr/doc/KDE-1.0; for more detailed
installation instructions, including how to use KDE's kdm as the "drop-in"
replacement for xdm, see INSTALL-kde-rh51; RedHat 5.0 users should
also look at gcc_to_egcs-HOWTO.

Notes:
(a) RedHat 5.0 only. See (3) above.
(b) Can also use qt-1.40 or later. See (1) above.
(c) If the qt-1.40 rpm is already installed. and you are downgrading
to qt-1.33, use "rpm --oldpackage --nodeps ...".
(d) kdesupport and kdelibs packages with release numbers 5rh51 or earlier
do not behave properly when being upgraded. (The library path gets
removed from /etc/ld.so.conf). To fix this problem, either first
remove the older kdesupport and kdelibs with "rpm --nodeps -e ...",
or install the newer kdesupport and kdelibs packages TWICE, using
"rpm --force -Uvh ..." the second time.
(e) Here "*" in "kde*" is any of:
{"admin", "games", "graphics", "multimedia", "network", "utils"}.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Enjoy kde on your RedHat 5.x system!
