OVERVIEW:
--------

 Linux-Mandrake is a new Linux distribution whose first version
``Linux-Mandrake 5.1 Venice'' was released on July, 27 1998. See the
announcement on:

The main characteristic in Linux-Mandrake is the integration of the
KDE desktop-manager (http://www.kde.org) to a well known Linux
distribution: Red Hat Linux 5.1 GPL (http://www.redhat.com). KDE 1.0
is the default graphical desktop under Linux-Mandrake.

Other modifications have been made to allow a coherent integration of
KDE in the Red Hat environment.

For example, you can mount and umount your drives (floppy and cdrom)
by a single click on your pre-configured desktop and this, even as a
normal user (non privilegied).

Furthermore, in KDE you get the language which has been selected
during the installation of Linux-Mandrake (i.e. if you install
Linux-Mandrake in german language, you'll get KDE automatically
configured in german language).

The main goal of Linux-Mandrake is to provide a standard Linux
environment (RH 5.1) ready to work just after the installation. This
means, without to download and configure KDE 1.0. This is time-gain
for the experimented user and facility for the beginner.

 The first version of Linux-Mandrake was only available on a few FTP
servers, for tests. You have been many users to download it and to
test it, thanx for that !

 - new RedHat updates have been integrated
 - more recent versions for a few packages (Netscape 4.06, KDE 1.0-4)
 - XEmacs 20.4 has been included
 - a few security modifications after user-feedback

 From the beginning of the Mandrake project, we have planned to work
on a Debian version of Linux-Mandrake. Thanx to VirtualNet Inc.
(http://www.virtualmobility.com/home.html) who have donated some
harware to the Mandrake project, this will certainly be possible !
