just an idea, don't know if it would work:

Plasma.DeviceSpecificItem {
	property ComponentType type: desktop
	Loader {
		source: {
			switch (type) {
				case desktop:
					return "path/to/desktop/impl";
				case tablet:
					return "path/to/tablet/impl";
			}
		}
	}
}

so to say each component is just a wrapper around the specific 
implementations. It's not nice, but maybe better than overwriting files...
