I confirm this problem using CVS 20020915. 
 
I have a pretty powerful machine (2.4GHz p4 w/1Gb DDR400 RAM), and it still 
chokes up when loading large images.  I'm using a 64Mb NVidia card @ 
2048x1536x24bpp (using the nv driver that comes with X, not the proprietary one 
from NVidia).
