There is an advantage to using a signature file.... ".signature" is used by 
mailers other than kmail.  

There's no trick to using the options.  Once you've selected your signature, 
click "Apply" and the next time you compose a mail the signature should be 
shown in the edit box. However, I've just tried all three methods (external 
signature file, signature file is program, and specify signature) and they 
all work, at least in kmail 1.2.
