the 128 -> 256 transition made hardly a difference for me (it's just
fun to have such a big disk cache :).
is you disk trashing (really trashing, not only working intensively) 
while starting kde apps? if not, it's not a memory shortage.

you should look at the output of "top" and similar system monitors.
your installation _is_ somehow hosed. may it have to do with kde or
not.
