I have had several hours of trouble with Red Hat 7 scripts, but never
had any problems with 6.1.

In any case, if you only want to run KDE 2, you don't need prefdm.  You
can eliminate it by replacing the last line in "/etc/inittab" with:

x:5:once:/usr/bin/kdm  -nodaemon
