Hi Jens,
I think people like Microsoft looking "evil", but while many companies may
seem "evil", I think there are few truly "evil" companies. They might do
evil things, might create evil software, but most aren't really evil (evil
is hackers, virus creators, etc.). Thus, I doubt that Microsoft has only
evil intents with Internet Explorer (I'm sure they want to destroy everyone,
but tell me - didn't Netscape also, before they had major competition?).
Internet Explorer is also more of a joy to program for, as a web developer
sometime I just forget a closing table tag (!), and people can still see it
on Internet Explorer. MSIE also was the first to support CSS, and other
tools for perfecting the look of a page (such as LEFTMARGIN & TOPMARGIN).

  -Tim
