It must have something to do with the way you are building,
I have libpopt.so.0 -> libpopt.so.0.0.0 on my harddrive.
Unfortunately, the commands used to build the file are buried in Debian
package building scripts and I don't know enough about it to give you a
definative answer.  Perhaps someone with more experience can tell you
how it should be done, it it probably just a matter of using the
correct gcc command (but I'm just guessing).
