KDE 1.1.2, the latest stable.

No, not really, although I think you shouldn't blame this on Slackware just
yet.
Try a
grep -r Desktop /opt/kde/share/*
to locate occurances of "Desktop" in the setup. Might be another file you
need to change. (also, make sure that there is no
~/.kde/share/apps/config/kfmrc with the old ~/Desktop in it, it will
overwrite the global one when it exists.
Hm, maybe a clue after all.
