I'm not sure how to handle this, as the wheel group is used for many
different things, so adding someone to that group might not be the best
idea. Looks to me like you have three choices:

1) Set the audio program setuid root: 

# chmod u+s <program>

2) Add yourself to the group

# adduser <user> wheel

3) Set global rw permissions

# chmod a+rw /dev/mixer0
