 Funny you should ask that, I finally cracked it last week.

 edit 

/opt/kde/share/applnk/Utilities/kvt.kdelnk     

and change the line that starts

Exec=kvt 
adding the option -ls which makes it a login script

e.g.
Exec=kvt -tn vt100 -vt_size huge -sl 500 -ls -caption "%c" %i %m


kvt -help tells you what else you can try in the options, the default is not to
run as a login script, so .profile is not executed.

 It baffled me for ages as all the linux books say .profile should be run but
it  isn't. Lots of newbie users who get linux+kde out of the box from Caldera
(for example) will no doubt fall into the same trap.
