That might not always work, especially if you have something like:

PATH="$PATH:$KDEDIR/bin"
LD_LIBRARY_PATH="$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:KDEDIR/lib"

/etc/profile comes first and adds KDE1 to the paths, your local one doesn't
replace it with KDE2 but only adds it.

If you do it in your personal .profile, you'd better redefine the entire
PATH variable.
