Then it's not the X server but the startup scripts :-)

I think it's nice if normal runlevel runs, and kdm is started from
/etc/rc.d/rc.local. This way you have the full 6 consoles (on a standard
Slack), and KDM on console 7, which doesn't take the console you run it
from. It's very convenient.
