you probably need to allow  root to use your X display,
before starting kppp, (as "root" will be running pppd)

To see if this is your problem, just su and login as root
in a kvt or konsole window, then try to run some x application from that window.
(e.g. emacs)   You will probably get the same message.

To fix this, type (as <user> , not as root)

xhost + <name>

where <name> is a hostname or user name.
I use <name>="localhost"
(and I put this in my .Xclients so it's done automatically when I start X)

Maybe "xhost + root" will work, also?
