a) no way, the kernel does that sufficiently
b) no
c) add *RAM*, it is absolutely crucial for good vmware performance;
   depending on what you are going to do 64 MB is absolutely the
   lowest reasonable amount

Furthermore, use a recent XFree release because of DGA support or
use one of the VMware supplied X servers if you can.
