You need to start your Xsession first using a command like "startx -- -bpp
16".....THEN you can run KDE using the command "startkde". To simplify
things. . .include the line "exec startkde" in your .xinitrc , that way you
need only type the "startx . . . . . . . . command and KDE will fire up
automagically.
