Subject: How do sessions work internally?

What exactly happens with the session when a user logs out? Presumably
the state of the apps that were running is stored somewhere. Is this
controlled by KDE or the application? And how do sessions fit in with
Autostart programs? If I put something in my Autostart folder, will I
get into a position where Autostart kicks it off, plus it gets saved in
the session, which means I get one more instance each time I log in?

The reason I ask is that my kclock, which always sits in the corner and
is restarted by the session, sometimes comes up as unsticky, even when I
leave it sticky before I log out. It's annoying and I couldn't find out
where the session information is stored for it.
