If I do 

ftp://username@ftp.somehwere.in.the.net/

I am asked for a password and then start with root directory "/" on the
specified machine. Omitting the trailing "/" sends me to my home directory,
so everything seems to work. Maybe You do not have the correct permissions
on "/" on the remote machine?
