I am going to answer my own message...because I found what seems
to be the problem: harddrive space.

I did not relegate enough space to /home, so it seems. Running
"df" showed that /home was 100% full. Moving home to a new partition
corrected the problem...as well as another problem in which I was not
able to open up any xterms/kterms. It appeared to have been a
permissions
problem or a problem with Xauthority but it actually was a problem of
no disk space. Giving more room to /home fixed everything.
