Thank you everyone for your suggestions about recompiling.  Yes, I know
about lack of ram..  I intend to upgrade my system when I can afford it.

It appears that compiling my own instead of using a out of the box RPM
system will improve speed, so I will do this probably after I upgrade.

Can anyone recommend a Howto, or FAQ, on compiling a system to make it fast
and small?
