1) this is unrelated to KDE. COL online help could be more useful.

2) xconfig can't do nothing because I suppose you didn't install the
kernel sources to start with

3) determine what sound card you have and what kernel sound module
(usually in /lib/modules/<kernel-version>/misc ) could handle it. I don't
know COL, but I believe they have a sound configuration tool.

WARN: not all sound cards available out there are supported by the linux
kernel. Especially the garbage ones (like the OptiSound) are not.
