Yes ,it helps.

Possibly. Also look at what loads and what starts at boot. You may not need
all of it.

One can't be too rich, too thin or have too much ram (the usual technical
qualifcaitions apply).

I upgraded a 486 box from 16 to 32 Mb and saw some speed incease, but not
like what I saw in Windows for a similar increase.

I also saw some significant increases in overall speed by reading the man
page for hdparm and using that information. The command selection includes a
benchmark timer so you can measure any improvements. This and the kernel
re-compile made the biggest difference on my 486 box.

I recently worked as a substitute teacher teaching French. What a humbling
experience. Your command of English is much better than my command of
French.

If you don't want to recompile the Red Hat kernel for your Pentium, the
Stampede distribution has just been released. The entire distribution is
re-compiled and optimised for Pentiums.
