Hello Folks,
this is for Solaris 2.6 X86 users who are interested in running KDE on there
machines to get a taste of this new desktop. I made a little binary release
for this machine last week. The binarys are in:

   ftp://ftp.fernuni-hagen.de/pub/fachb/inf/pri6/kde-1.0-sol-2.6x86/

For installing do the following:

1. get all files and save them in your home dir.
2. go to /opt and unpack in the given order by typing:

   su -
   cd /opt
   gzip -d < $HOME/qt-1.40.tar.gz  | tar xf -
   ln -s qt-1.40 qt
   gzip -d < $HOME/kdesupport.tar.gz | tar xf -
   gzip -d < $HOME/kdelibs.tar.gz  | tar xf -
   gzip -d < $HOME/kdebase.tar.gz | tar xf -
   gzip -d < $HOME/kdenetwork.tar.gz | tar xf -
   gzip -d < $HOME/kdegames.tar.gz | tar xf -
   gzip -d < $HOME/kdegraphics.tar.gz | tar xf -
   gzip -d < $HOME/kdeutils.tar.gz  | tar xf -
   gzip -d < $HOME/kdeadmin.tar.gz | tar xf -

3. make the screensavers suid root

   cd kde/bin
   chown root:root *.kss
   chmod u+s *.kss

4. add paths to /opt/kde and /opt/qt in your .profile like:

   QTDIR=/opt/qt;                                     export QTDIR
   PATH=$QTDIR/bin:$PATH;                             export PATH
   MANPATH=$QTDIR/man:$MANPATH;                       export MANPATH
   LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$QTDIR/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH;       export LD_LIBRARY_PATH

   KDEDIR=/opt/kde;                                   export KDEDIR
   PATH=$KDEDIR/bin:$PATH;                            export PATH
   MANPATH=$KDEDIR/man:$MANPATH;                      export MANPATH

5. add startkde in your .xinitrc Openwin startup file like this:

   if test -x /opt/kde/bin/startkde ; then
     startkde
   fi

6. Logout. Login and select "Openwin" from your startup menu on the
   CDE login screen.

KDE should start now. The start sequence is exactly the same as in
Solaris Sparc.

I checked this binarys on two systems. One connected via NIS in a enviroment
with 10 other machines and home dirs mounted, and one other "stand alone"
machine. On the networked machine KDE sometimes has trouble with logging
in and logging out (the machine hangs on logging out, the desktop background
was not drawn on logging in). The "stand alone" machine works without trouble.

But don't expect that all programs work (kmail does not)! KDE is developed
mainly by Linux programmers and they need help from other Unix programmers.
But for me this binarys are good enough to work. (And the games are also very
nice :) )

If these bins don't work on your machine, please send me a note so i can
remove it from the server.

   Michael Fischer
