I was just wondering why only Java/ICQJava had this particular problem
and what magic you had to do to fix it...

I just noticed this in the JDK docs, by the way:

Due to basic problems with the JDK 1.1.5 source base from Sun, interactions
with various window managers may be "interesting".  For fvwm, and for CDE
things work fine; for others, odd window placement or problems with sizing
occur.  We would welcome help in diagnosing and and fixing the problems
on the various window managers.
