I've seen many similar reports. Any ideas on what's going on?

Silly question: What have they done with KDE recently? I used beta 3 and 4 on
a 486/80, 20 or 32M of memory (Slack 3.2--2.0.29, libc5), and it was fairly
fast. 1.0 seemed about the same speed if not slower on a K6/250 with 32Mb
(Redfat 5.1--2.0.34,libc6), and seems to fill up almost all the memory of a
48Mb version of that. It's like it was designed for a moving hardware target.
