I dunno. If you were using bsd's make it would not choose the best
options. I think however, that if you run configure with no arguments,
you'll get -O2 by default (or nothing). In any case, -pipe -O2 (-m486 or
-mpentium if you're on x86) are generally good options to use with gcc
regardless of the OS. If you're going to do some debugging, -g -pipe is
generally the best idea (optimization can make for hard to understand
debugging info).

Well then there is probably a bit of tweaking that could be done on behalf
of both systems to increase speed.
